Description

(1858-1920) World famous Painter and Illustrator, William Thomas Smedley, was an American Artist from Chester County, Pennsylvania.  W.T. Smedley studied engraving and art in Philadelphia, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.  He also studied in Paris, under Jean-Paul Lauren, and they traveled the world together.  W.T. Smedley was hired as an illustrator for the Harper’s Weekly Journal of Civilization, and many other famous publications, back in the day.  He did an amazing job of capturing people, living their vintage lives, throughout his paintings and illustrations, world wide.

This Harper’s Weekly Journal of Civilization, front page, colored wood engraving on paper, cover scene, took place on July 19, 1890, on the corner of Connecticut Avenue and M Street N.W., in Washington D.C.                                Credits: Harper’s  Weekly Volume XXXIV, No. 1752.  Copyright, 1890, by Harper & Brothers.  Including supplements, the newspaper sold for ten cents a copy.  That was a lot of money, back in the day!

Professionally framed with gold metallic around the print, matted in a neutral taupe, and framed in gold painted wood, with burgundy accents.  Authenticity was confirmed by the framer, who specializes in vintage advertising and maps.  Measures 21″ x 16″ framed.  Measures 15″ x 9 1/2″ inside the mat.
